What is Motivational Interviewing? Why and How Will It Work for Me?

THE WHAT

Motivational Interviewing (M.I.) was first envisioned and created by William Miller and Stephen Rollnick in 1983 as a way to help people traverse the difficulties of ambivalence within individual change. What separates M.I. from other constructs is its unique ability to shine a spotlight and evoke the inner thoughts of people. Miller and Rollnick discovered that true and sustained change is greatly enhanced when a person can be the champion and architect of their own change.

THE WHY

At Telos Motivational Interviewing, we instruct excellence in the art of individual change management to adhere to the philosophy of Miller and Rollnick. However, we have also evolved. We theorized, created and have successfully applied M.I.’s powerful communication modality to fit any situation, scenario or conversation.

THE HOW

It is human nature to encode the spoken word. M.I. discovers that which is hidden in conversation by using Reflective Listening to successfully decode what a person is really attempting to say or by completing their thoughts. The practitioner is then able to strategically reply using a uniquely-learned skill set which opens conversation rather than closing it; creating a rich and fruitful connection and conversation. Moreover, all of this is completed while simultaneously producing an environment of mutual autonomy and respect, eliminating preconceived outcomes and removing the risk or desire of attempting to fix a problem, person or behavior. This is the ultimate goal for any person, situation, scenario or conversation! We can show you how to incorporate this incredible communication tool into any policy, procedure or practice for amazing results!
